About the Job
Questar III BOCES is seeking an hourly CDL Training Instructor to support students enrolled in the Heavy Equipment and Maintenance program at the Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham.
The instructor will provide supervised behind-the-wheel instruction to eligible students pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License.
This position will provide supervised behind-the-wheel training and road hours for eligible students enrolled in the Heavy Equipment and Maintenance program at the Marilyn A. Noonan School at Durham who are pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). A dedicated hourly instructor will expand access to individualized driving instruction while allowing existing program instructors to maintain continuity of classroom and equipment instruction. Hours will be flexible and scheduled according to student readiness, instructor availability, vehicle availability, and program needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide individualized instruction in safe commercial vehicle operation, including vehicle inspections, basic vehicle control, maneuvering, and public-road driving.
- Facilitate scheduled driving hours and help students develop the skills and proficiency needed for CDL testing.
- Verify student readiness and required driving credentials with program staff before beginning behind-the-wheel instruction.
- Maintain accurate records of driving hours, skills practiced, student progress, and proficiency assessments.
- Coordinate training schedules and communicate student progress with program instructors and the building principal.
- Follow applicable federal and New York State training requirements, Questar III procedures, and vehicle safety protocols.
- Identify and promptly report vehicle maintenance concerns or conditions that could affect safe instruction.
Requirements:
- Valid Commercial Driver License, with all endorsements necessary to operate the vehicle used for instruction.
- Candidates must meet applicable federal and New York State instructor requirements.
- Must satisfy applicable medical qualification requirements and Questar III employment and driver eligibility requirements.
- Experience training drivers or working with high school students is preferred.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Exceptional communication, classroom management, and relationship-building skills to mentor high school students and collaborate with industry partners.
This is an hourly position ($35/hr) with flexible scheduling coordinated around student availability and program needs. Applicants should identify their availability when applying.
