About
QUESTAR III BOCES is seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable, and student-centric Clinical Nurse Substitute Teacher to support our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Nursing program at Robert H. Gibson Technical High School in Troy, NY.
In this role, you will step in during the absence of the primary instructor to deliver high-quality instruction, supervise laboratory or clinical practice, and ensure students continue progress toward their certifications (such as CNA or LPN pathways).
The ideal candidate blends strong nursing expertise with a passion for mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals in a safe, structured, and encouraging learning environment.
Responsibilities

Instructional Delivery: Implement lesson plans left by the primary instructor, covering topics such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and patient care fundamentals.

Clinical & Lab Supervision: Oversee students in the school’s nursing lab or at designated clinical sites, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, infection control, and professional healthcare standards.

Skills Assessment: Monitor and guide students as they practice hands-on clinical skills (e.g., vital signs, patient transfer, hygiene care, PPE protocol).

Classroom Management: Maintain a positive, orderly, and professional classroom environment that mirrors a real-world healthcare setting.

Documentation & Feedback: Keep accurate records of student attendance, completed lab hours, and clinical performance. Provide a detailed summary of the day for the returning teacher.

Safety & Compliance: Ensure all school board policies, NYS Department of Health regulations, and safety guidelines are rigorously followed during instructional time.
Requirements
Note: Candidates must possess a valid nursing license and meet local/state requirements for CTE instruction.

License/Certification: Active, unencumbered license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State (LPN candidates with extensive clinical and teaching experience may be considered).

Education: Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 2–3 years of clinical nursing experience. Prior experience in nurse education, clinical instruction, or working with adolescents is highly desirable.

Certification (Preferred): Possession of, or eligibility for, a New York State teaching certificate or Adult Education permit in Nurse's Assisting or a related health occupation.

Clearances: Must pass a New York State fingerprinting and background check.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical concepts to high school students.

Strong adaptability and problem-solving skills to successfully manage changing schedules or lesson plan adjustments.

Familiarity with NYS Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) curriculum requirements is a major plus.
Physical Demands

Must be able to stand, walk, and demonstrate patient care techniques (bending, lifting, positioning) for extended periods.

Work is performed in both a traditional classroom/lab setting and potentially off-site clinical/healthcare facilities.
