About
The Construction Technician Apprentice is an entry-level position designed for individuals looking to build a career in facilities maintenance, grounds keeping, and light construction. Working directly alongside experienced operations and maintenance staff, the apprentice will gain valuable, hands-on experience while assisting with day-to-day facility upkeep, seasonal grounds keeping, and basic trade work.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance Support
- Collaborative Support: Work closely with senior operations and maintenance technicians to assist with building repairs, upgrades, and preventative maintenance tasks.
- Light Electrical Work: Assist with basic, low-risk electrical tasks under direct supervision (e.g., replacing light bulbs/fixtures, resetting breakers, and assisting with wiring runs).
- Tool & Equipment Care: Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment. Ensure all tools are cleaned and stored correctly.
Groundskeeping & Seasonal Maintenance
- Lawn Care: Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, weed whacking, edging, and clearing brush or debris.
- Snow & Ice Removal: Assist with seasonal winter maintenance by operating snowblowers, shoveling walkways, and applying salt/ice melt to ensure safe campus pathways.
- Property Upkeep: Help maintain the overall aesthetic and safety of the facility’s exterior spaces.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all workplace safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Learn and adhere to OSHA safety standards and facility compliance regulations.
Qualifications & Skills
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma, GED, or current enrollment in a relevant vocational/technical program.
- Experience: No prior professional experience required; a strong willingness to learn, take direction, and work hard is essential.
- License: A valid driver's license is preferred (for operating facility vehicles or moving between work sites).

- Eagerness to Learn: A strong interest in the construction, electrical, or facilities maintenance trades.
- Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse maintenance crew and communicate effectively.
- Reliability: Punctual, dependable, and able to follow multi-step instructions safely.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
- Comfort working outdoors in all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, and cold).
- Ability to safely navigate active maintenance and light construction zones.
Columbia County Civil Service residency requirements will apply (must be a resident of Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Greene, Ulster or Dutchess County at time of hire).
