About the Job
Questar III BOCES announces a full-time (6-week summer program) Special Education ONE on ONE Teaching Assistant position to support Questar III special education students during ESY located at our following School Locations:
George Washington School (Troy)
Marilyn A. Noonan School (Durham)
Paul Puccio School at Maple Hill (Schodack)
Rensselaer Academy (Rensselaer)
Sackett Educational Center (Castleton-on-Hudson)
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient 1:1 Teaching Assistant for our 6-week Extended School Year (ESY) program. Unlike a general classroom assistant, your primary focus will be the success, safety, and engagement of one specific student.
You will act as their primary support system, ensuring they can access the summer curriculum, meet their specific IEP goals, and navigate the school day successfully to prevent skill regression.
If you are passionate about making a difference and enjoy a fast-paced, collaborative environment, this is a perfect way to spend your summer.
Since ESY is specifically designed to maintain skills rather than introduce new curriculum, you’ll be the bridge that ensures our students start the upcoming fall semester with confidence and consistency. Experience working with Special Education students is preferred.
Extended Summer Year (ESY) Schedule is as follows:
- July 2, 2026 - Orientation Day - All Day
- July 7, 2026 - August 14, 2026 - 6 weeks
Responsibilities
Individualized Support: Provide constant 1:1 supervision and instructional support tailored to the specific academic and functional goals of your assigned student.
Behavioral Implementation: Strictly follow and implement the student's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), using de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement as outlined.
Academic Modification: Work closely with the Lead Teacher to modify daily assignments on the fly to meet the student's specific learning style and ability level.
Facilitate Inclusion: Help the student move between the classroom, therapy sessions (OT/PT/Speech), and social activities, acting as a bridge for communication and interaction with peers.
Progress Documentation: Keep detailed, daily logs of the student’s progress, behavioral frequency, and successful interventions to be reviewed by the educational team.
Personal Care & Safety: Assist with specific physical or medical needs, which may include sensory breaks, mobility assistance, or hygiene support as required by the student's profile.
Requirements:
NYS Teaching Assistant Certification required at time of hire.
High School Diploma required; Paraeducator certification or college coursework in Special Education/Psychology is highly preferred.
Preferred candidates will have experience working with Special Education students. Prior experience working 1:1 with students with complex needs (e.g., Non-verbal, Autism, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders) is a significant advantage.
