About the Job
Questar III BOCES announces a full-time (6-week summer program) Music Therapist position to support Questar III special education students during ESY located at our following School Locations:
George Washington School (Troy)
Marilyn A. Noonan School (Durham)
Paul Puccio School at Maple Hill (Schodack)
Rensselaer Academy (Rensselaer)
Sackett Educational Center (Castleton-on-Hudson)
The SPED Music Therapist uses evidence-based music interventions to support the individualized goals of students with diverse needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental delays, and emotional/behavioral disorders. You will work as a "Related Service" provider, meaning your work is directly tied to the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Responsibilities:
Assessment & Goal Setting:
Evaluate students’ responses to musical stimuli to determine if music therapy is a necessary service for their educational success.
IEP Integration:
Design music-based interventions that target non-musical goals, such as:
Communication:
Using singing or chanting to encourage verbalization or AAC use.
Motor Skills:
Using rhythmic auditory stimulation to improve gait or fine motor coordination.
Social/Emotional:
Facilitating group instrument play to practice turn-taking and emotional regulation.
Implementation:
Lead individual and small-group sessions across various school settings (self-contained classrooms, sensory rooms, or inclusion settings).
Data Collection:
Systematically track student progress on IEP goals and adjust therapeutic techniques based on data-driven results.
Collaboration:
Consult with the "Big Three" (OT, PT, SLP) to co-treat and ensure a holistic approach to student development.
Extended Summer Year (ESY) Schedule is as follows:
- July 2, 2026 - Orientation Day - All Day
- July 7, 2026 - August 14, 2026 - 6 weeks
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Music Therapy from an AMTA-approved program.
MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) through the CBMT.
Completion of a 1,000+ hour clinical internship.
Proficiency in guitar, piano, percussion, and voice (must be able to lead while mobile).
