About the Job

Questar III BOCES is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled CTE (Career and Technical Education) Construction Teacher to lead hands-on construction-focused activities for campers during our summer program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction trades, a passion for teaching and mentoring youth, and the ability to create engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences. Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development & Instruction:

    • Develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and project ideas that introduce campers to basic construction principles, techniques, and safety practices.

    • Lead engaging and interactive activities such as basic carpentry, framing, simple electrical wiring (simulated or safe, low-voltage), plumbing basics, or other relevant construction skills.

    • Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse learning styles and abilities of campers.

    • Ensure all activities are conducted in a safe and supervised manner, adhering to camp safety protocols.

  • Project Management & Supervision:

    • Oversee camper participation in construction projects, providing guidance, instruction, and support.

    • Manage tools, equipment, and materials effectively, ensuring proper use and maintenance.

    • Foster teamwork and collaboration among campers during group projects.

    • Encourage problem-solving and critical thinking skills related to construction challenges.

  • Safety & Well-being:

    • Prioritize the safety of all campers by enforcing safety rules and procedures at all times.

    • Provide clear and concise safety instructions before each activity.

    • Be prepared to respond appropriately to any accidents or incidents.

    • Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment for all campers.

  • Collaboration & Communication:

    • Work collaboratively with other camp staff to ensure a cohesive and well-rounded camp experience.

    • Communicate effectively with camp directors and other staff regarding program activities, camper progress, and any concerns.

    • Potentially interact with parents/guardians during designated times.

  • Other Duties:

    • Assist with setup and cleanup of activity areas.

    • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.

    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in one or more construction trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing, general construction).

  • Prior experience working with children or adolescents in an educational or recreational setting (e.g., teaching, mentoring, coaching).

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts in a clear and engaging manner.

  • Patient, enthusiastic, and adaptable with a positive attitude.

  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures related to construction tools and equipment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification (preferred, or willingness to obtain).

  • Background check clearance as required by camp policy and state regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal teaching certification or relevant CTE credentials.

  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum.

  • Familiarity with project-based learning.
