Starting Immediately - Questar III BOCES announces vacancies for full-time probationary Teaching Assistants to support students at Sackett Elementary in Castleton, NY, Rensselaer Academy in Rensselaer NY, and the George Washington School in Troy, NY.

Teaching Assistant - Cosmetology

About the Job

Questar III BOCES is seeking a highly motivated and organized Cosmetology Teacher's Assistant to support our instructors in delivering high-quality cosmetology education. This role is ideal for cosmetologist who is passionate about the industry, enjoys working with students, and is looking to transition into an educational support role.  The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Cosmetology class is located at our Robert H. Gibson Technical School in Troy, NY. This position will assist students under the direction of a certified CTE Cosmetology Teacher in the delivery of instruction and management of the classroom. 

 

Responsibilities:

The Cosmetology Teacher's Assistant will work closely with cosmetology instructors to:

Student Support:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to students during practical exercises and theory lessons.

  • Help students understand and apply cosmetology techniques (e.g., hair cutting, coloring, styling, skincare, nail technology).

  • Monitor student progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

  • Answer student questions and provide constructive feedback.

  • Ensure students adhere to safety and sanitation protocols in the lab and clinic.

Classroom/Lab Preparation & Maintenance:

  • Assist with setting up and breaking down practical workstations and demonstrations.

  • Ensure all necessary tools, equipment, and products are available and organized.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the classroom, lab, and clinic areas.

  • Monitor inventory of supplies and notify instructors or administrative staff when reordering is needed.

  • Ensure proper sterilization and sanitation of tools and equipment.

Administrative Support:

  • Take attendance and assist with record-keeping.

  • Help prepare instructional materials (e.g., handouts, visual aids).

  • Proctor exams or practical assessments as needed.

  • Assist with grading practical assignments under instructor supervision.

  • Communicate effectively with instructors regarding student needs and classroom observations.

General Support:

  • Model professional behavior and appearance for students.

  • Stay current with industry trends and techniques.

  • Assist with school events, open houses, or student competitions as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by instructors or school administration.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • NYS Teaching Assistant certification level 1 or higher (or willingness to become certified) required.

  • Strong understanding of cosmetology theory and practical techniques across various disciplines (hair, skin, nails).

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Patience and a passion for teaching and mentoring students.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) preferred.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform duties requiring physical dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid and current Cosmetology License in New York State.

  • 1-3 years of recent, practical experience in a salon or spa setting.
